Default Windows Xp 64bit on a 32bit CPU?

Is it possible to install and run Windows Xp Pro x64 on an Intel® Core™ 2 Extreme X6800 2.93GHz 4MB 32bit CPU? I know the CPU has 64bit extensions, but I don't understand if that applies only to 64bit applications that run on the 32bit OS.

It is possible to run 64 bit hardware on a 32 bit OS.

It is not possible to run 64 bit Applications on a 32 bit OS.

Then what is the purpose of the 63bit extensions? Only for hardware?

Thanks,

Only because most of the 64 bit hardware is backwards compatible with 32 bit software.
