I was wondering, why you cant change the start-up programs in Vista...

I use Windows Defender, and remove programs from startup, yet no matter what, it still starts up (the programs I removed from the list)

It's because they'r probably either...

1. Being loaded by something else
2. Is still in a startup list, just a different one to the one you removed it from.

What program are you trying to stop starting up?

messenger is a pain that way. There is an option in MSN messenger it'self to not start when windows starts.

PS. I think this should have been in the Operating Systems board. I would have missed it if it weren't the top item.

leftcoast is right, there's an option in messenger to start the service on system startup. Uncheck that and you're golden.

Open Messenger. Go under Tools>Options. There click on Sign In. There you will see the very first option stated is:

Automatically run Windows Live Messenger when I log on to Windows.

Uncheck the box and it wont load. That is a program setting not a OS Setting.
