The interesting tidbit was included in the release notes for the interim update to Vista Beta 2 (build 5456.5; not publicly available) and sheds light on the magnitude of the problem of unreliable DVD burns.

I burned mine at 12x speed with no problem.

Windows Vista Capable or Windows Vista Weakling?
We test three different retail computer systems sporting the "Windows Vista Capable" badges and tell you if it's a gimmick to move systems or if you can really expect an acceptable user experience. We even throw in a bit of a preview of Vista's features as well.

Yup knew that was coming. Was supposed to be the 15th. Looks like they went a bit early.

During a presentation at Cape Town, Bill Gates talked a lot about Vista.

He said that Microsoft was spending between $8 billion and $9 billion on both Windows Vista and Office 2007 and that partners would be spending 20 times more for developing applications for Windows Vista.

But the most interesting bit is the following: "If the feedback from the beta tests shows it is not ready for prime time, I'd be glad to delay it."

It's not a fact, Windows Vista could still ship when promised, but this way, there shouldn't be a surprise if Microsoft announces another delay for its next operating system, seeing as how disappointed are most beta testers by seeing the current build, Build 5456.

WinFuture has just posted a bunch of screenshots of Windows Vista Build 5466, not-so-long after the release of the latest interim build beta-testers got.

The new build doesn't seem very different from build 5456, with a few difference throughout the user interface. The new Aero Basic theme is in the build, along with some new icons.

You can see the 54 screenshots from their screenshot gallery

According to PCWorld, Microsoft plans to give a hacker conference in Asia an inside look at Windows Vista later this year. That is either the most confident thing ever done or the stupidest. I guess only time will tell us which one is which.

"Companies know that fixing vulnerabilities in already released products is always going to be much more expensive than finding and squashing them during the development stage," said Dhillon Andrew Kannabhiran, organizer of the 6th annual Hack In The Box deep knowledge security conference (HITBSecConf2006) set for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in September.

Only days after the release of build 5456 of Windows Vista, Microsoft already plans to release another interim build, no later than this week.

The build supposedly consumes fewer system resources and the long-awaited new Aero Basic theme.

The build number is currently unknown and the build will likely be released to usual technical beta testers as well as TechNet subscribers.

"Vista in its beta form is pretty taxing on the system. It's slow and a little non-responsive," said Mike Sievert, corporate vice president of Windows client marketing at Microsoft.

"That piece of software is now about nine weeks old and that may not sound like a lot but at this stage, that's an old version in software terms."

"You'll see a huge difference [in performance]," Sievert said of the interim release, noting Microsoft is recommending 512 Megabytes of memory when testing the new code.
