Windows Virtual PC/XP mode has wiped all documents. Any suggestions?

I recently installed Windows XP mode, and unistalled earlier today as it was no longer required. However in the process, it seemed to incorporate and then subsequently delete the named user section of the User folder (so C:/Users/"Steve").

Does anyone know how this might have happened, and how I can avoid this in future? I last backed my stuff up a month ago so the damage to my own files are slightly mitigated, but the other people's items that were more recently created would be harder to replace; any ideas about what I could try for them?

That should not have happened. The only way this would have happened is if you linked your profile from XP to those Win7 folders.

All of my XP Data from XP Mode is stored in my Virtual PC folder, not in my personal folder.

You might be able to use Recuva to get the files back. But no guarantee.

+1 to KSoD, just as a precaution don't link the files to your own personal folders.
