Windows Update For XP Help

My sister recently recieved a computer from her school. Not long after she had it, a virus was found. Since we got it off, her computer has been acting wierd. When we try to close a web page, such as Yahoo, it just makes a little ding and wont close. It just stays open either way we try to shut it down, except when we Cntl, Alt, Delete. I think I need to update the computer so that it can have the critical updates it needs but I am not sure. That is the other thing. When I try to update the computer, I guess you can say it stays frozen on the screen that says to press "yes" to download the updates. That popup never comes up so it wont let me update.

Which operating system is this? If it is Win2k or XP I would always advise to run a repair on the OS after getting infected with a virus as this is the only sure way to make sure its gone. Then after you run the repair you can download all the windows updates in one shot.
