Default windows\system32\config\system is missing or corrupt

When I boot up my computer it stops and says windows\system32\config\system is missing or corrupt. Use repair consule blah blah. I try to use the repair consule, but when I pick which windows installation to use(I only have one) I hit 1 for my installation, hit enter, and it stops doing anything. Ive left it like this for an hour or so and nothing happened. So instead I go to try to just re-install windows. When it says it's looking for previous versions of windows, it stays there and doesnt do anything anymore. I unplugged my wireless card and all USB things except keyboard and mouse and still nothing.

Your registry is corrupted. If you can boot to safe mode, system restore might work, or you can repair the registry from the XP cd.

This might help:
