Unhappy <windows root>\system32\hal.dll error

Hi all hope someone can help me.
Major problem with my laptop, on turning it on I receive the message, could not boot as there was a missing file.
<windows root>\system32\hal.dll
I don’t have an original Windows XP cd as it was damaged so I tried to boot from my pc’s Windows CD with no joy, I recently replaced the original cd-rom with a cd-rw drive, not sure if that could have anything to do with it.
I've tried changing the BIOS to boot from cd-rom, but no joy with that, i'm now stumped.
Is it possible to re install by going into DOS? Or is it because the PC Windows CD is a newer version.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated, cheers, Kets.

I had the same problem after i finished building my new pc. its because you're now using different hardware or sumthin and i had to reinstall windows. dunno if you can do any of that but thats what i was told anyway.

you need the Windows CD to fix this problem. if it's XP or 2000, you can do a repair-install by booting from the CD
pressing enter at the first screen (install)
pressing F8 (terms and conditions)
then after it says "searching for previous versions of Microsoft Windows" press r

it will then go through installing Windows, however it will only reinstall the OS itself. it will leave your files and settings intact.

stop trying to bootleg free aol. many people are getting this error when they try to get more free months of aol (the trial version that doesn't require a credit card) by using a different name to get more free months
The Ultimate Hard Drive Utility PowerMax 4.23. (It now has the ability to clean a Boot Sector virus on the quick erase option.)
The best browser Netscape 8
Have you accidently delete something? Look here (trial. the better one) and here(free)
