So I know you can only install the OEM version on only 1 computer but my question is how do they get this restriction to work? If theres some kind of registered serial to 1 computer or motherboard, how will it know not to run on another computer/motherboard if it isn't connected to the internet since CDs are read only?

The serial that you use during the install is sent to the Microsoft servers for activation which is required to use Windows beyond 30 days.

If that hardware profile doesnt match the activation will be declined.

So if you try to use the same disk on another system and have changed the mobo& CPU it will know cause that is 2 items in the hardware profile that is sent to the M$ servers.

So if those do not match the ones on file already activation is declined.

That is how they do it.

Before you ask, you HAVE to register the product with MS. Ify ou don't the OS will slowly stop functions, certain services cease to work.

But as Mak stated you HAVE to register the product, once you register the product your hardware profile will be sent to MS so that if you install that on another computer it will not be able to register.

Lex you don't HAVE to Register. You HAVE to ACTIVATE. ;)
