Uninstall Windows Messenger

Can't seem to find a way to uninstall Windows Messenger? Well, there is a way: Click Start > Run and in the Open: box type the following command (press OK when done):

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

You can just copy/paste the command above in the Open: box from the Run command.

Note: If you have Windows XP Service Pack 1 installed, you'll receive this error message:

Error Unregistering the OCX 16422

Just click OK, Windows Messenger will still be removed.

Windows Messenger Service: The Windows Messenger Service is an unfortunately named component of Windows that cannot be uninstalled. It has nothing to do with instant Messaging, really, and can almost always be safely turned off. Here's how:

Right Click on My Computer
Click on Manage
Expand the Services & Applications node
Click on Services
Scroll down to find, and then double click on Messenger
In the resulting dialog box, set the Startup Type to Disabled.
Click on Stop to stop the service immediately.
