Windows Media Player/.AVI troble

This is my first post, so if this isn't in the correct forum I apologize. I downloaded a few movies recently and have been trying to figure out how to play them. They are in the ".avi" format. My Windows Media Player says I do not have the right "codec" to play them.

I have done some research and found out what a codec is and that it is a fairly common problem, but I havn't been able to figure out how to fix it. The biggest thing that I know about computers is posting on forums such as these, so I figured I would ask the experts before I mess anything up.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
