Default Windows Live Messenger Beta NOT Public

The confusion probably started after a red colored "Windows Live Messenger" text link appeared on MSN UK's homepage by the end of last week.

It links to a product page still showing screenshots of older Beta-versions and claiming that "the new Windows Live Messenger Beta is [...] as always [...] free to download".

Indeed, it is free to download but you still have to sign up for the trial first (don't worry if your country's not listed) and wait a couple of days before you get invited.

Admittedly, if a beta version is being used already by about one million users the definition of "public" is contestable. But let's just conclude that there's still NO instantly available direct download link for just anybody.

One of the largest concerns since the beginning of the BETA test for WLM has been the UI (User Interface). Most testers had the same opinion, in the first build that the UI was too childish and that in the latest build it's too "MSN Messenger 7.5ish".

Well today, it seems the LiveSide found and released screenshots of what they say is most likely the final UI for Windows Live Messenger. With significant improvements, the UI now features a "Glass" like design as well as the highly anticipated new status icons.

It also appears that the WLM logo has been changed again and now follows the Windows Vista pattern of a round orb with the Vista Flag within it.

LiveSide also mentioned a new Voice Mail feature but have not yet released any additional information on it. We will bring you the latest news on this as it is released.

All you need to do to download this is to go to:

http://ideas.live.com/

And then scroll down to the Messenger Livea and click sign up. You need to have a MSN/Hotmail Address though. And thats it. You can download it once you sign in!

Responding to queries on the status of integration with Yahoo Messenger, Microsoft said Monday that it was still working toward integrating the Yahoo network into the Windows Live Messenger client. "I still don't know exactly when you're going to be able to start adding those Yahoo! Buddies to your WL Messenger, but it can't be much longer," Messenger team member Leah posted to the team blog Monday.

The original deal to link the two networks was announced in October of last year. At the time, the companies said that the integration would occur by the second quarter of 2006. According to the blog post, a fully functional version of Windows Live Messenger with the Yahoo network integrated is being tested internally, however final testing has not begun.

As the marriage between Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger is quickly approaching, more details about the level of integration are leaking through. Here's what we can already disclose to you:

- You will only be able to exchange text messages, no files (so no Sharing Folders either), no Winks, no audio/video, etc.

- You will be able to check each others statuses, but "Away" still shows as "Online" in Yahoo! Messenger. Therefor, you have to set your status to "Busy" if you want to show as "Away" on the other end. Ah, the logic!

- Group conversations (ie. more than 2 participants) are not supported.

- You will not be able to verify the e-mail address of a Yahoo! contact, so make sure you add the right one.

As you can see the compatibility is strongly limited in this first stage. Especially the absence of file transfer and voice chat features, in this day and age, is a serious handicap that will not convince most active users to stick to just one of both programs. But at least "we're talking"!

The guys at The Hotfix are stating that they plan to leak the final Windows Live Messenger build; the same build that's planned to be released on June 16th.

No information is out yet about the supposed leak, except that it will be posted in less than 10 hours. No direct link to the thread at The Hotfix will be posted as they want people to pay before seeing it.

Our advice to you is that you shouldn't touch The Hotfix with a ten foot barge pole. We find it utterly disgusting and dispickable that they're trying to rake in money from us enthusiasts for a free (and in this case - warezed) product.
