If a system has Windows 98 on it, can I upgrade to Windows 2000 (by disk installation) and not have to back up any files already on the computer? Will it just upgrade everything and not erase any files?

Thanks

i think it will prompt you to format the hard drive, which you do not want to do, or leave the filesystem intact, pick this.

after the upgrade you will want to convert your fat filesystem to ntfs using the convert command

I appreciate your response but that last part was greek to me. I would hate to begin this process and then not know what to do and somehow lose all of their files.

When you convert your filesystem, you electronically organize files in your hard drive's file cabnet. With NTFS, each folder and each file has to be checked out by a clerk who holds the Access Control List. The ACL states who can do what with the file or folder.
