Re: Windows 7 Thread and FAQ

Windows 7 review

Windows 7 RTM review, from Engadget. Sounds really great! However, one point stands out the most n worries me: IE8 itself, but mostly what was said about the Overall speed / stability section:

Still, it's not perfect. On the well-appointed machine we performed an in-place upgrade from Vista on (trust us, a clean install is worth the hassle, learn from our mistakes) we found Gadgets taking a while to load on boot, occasional system-wide slowdowns when we were doing a tad "too much" with media, and Internet Explorer felt pretty sad compared to the competition.

While streaming Windows Media Center to our Xbox 360 we had trouble maintaining an internet connection, or perhaps a network connection -- it was unclear which was dropping. After we disconnected and reconnected the network would work again, but would break soon after. We eventually gave up and restarted, after which things seemed to work just fine.

Our worst experiences, however, were with a clean install to a quite modern netbook. The OS became increasingly unstable over time -- Windows Explorer itself seemed to be the main culprit -- and the machine eventually failed to boot entirely. Luckily, the Startup Repair utility managed to jump to the rescue and found a System Restore point that booted fine, though we lost the few customizations we'd made up to that point and were face with basically a fresh install again. It was nice of Windows 7 to recover itself so well, but we would obviously have preferred to not run into that issue in the first place.

Re: Windows 7 Thread and FAQ

At first i see that the main problem was the in place upgrade. Anyone would tell you that those are dodgy at the best of times.

As for the clean install aspect. I have been running RTM since the 6th. No restart, no crashes. 6 straight days of running it. Even now it is still just as fast and responsive as it was the day i installed it.

So that leads me to believe that they have something problematic with the system. Bad Driver, bad format of the drive or something which lead to the cause.

The major downfall that i have seen is that Win7, just like Vista, uses a quick format option during the install process. The full format option that XP offered is gone. As such this is a major downfall. As a quick install is just like moving the data to the recycle bin. It does not scan for problems with the drive, sectors and such. It also does not mark such areas as bad so that the system knows not to use them.

This is why i suggest a full format using other tools such as GParted or others. It will pretty much guarantee that the install will be going on as pure a disk as possible and lead to very few problems down the line.

Re: Windows 7 Thread and FAQ

Is a full format recommended on a new HDD? Or is it not really necesarry since the disk has never had data on it?

Re: Windows 7 Thread and FAQ

I would still do a full format. I have never liked quick. It seems to cause more issues than anything from my experience.

*Note*

I have RTM installed fresh as of tonight. I have gotten roughly 55 applications installed, no games yet. I have a list going and will post it up at some point of things that are known to be working in Win7 RTM x86. I can't test x64 as i dont have a x64 system. So dont ask!

Re: Windows 7 Thread and FAQ

GParted i have try that again. I mean, me wanting to go from 32-bit to 64-bit in an upgrade worries me now. I should still back up in case something goes wrong as recommended.

Re: Windows 7 Thread and FAQ

You cant upgrade from a 32 Bit Vista to a 64 Bit Win7. It isnt possible. All you have to do is look back 1 page to find Osiris's post.

The upgrade paths are only 32 Bit to 32 Bit and 64 Bit to 64 Bit. So no matter what you are going to be formatting and fresh installing Wildside.

Re: Windows 7 Thread and FAQ

I have 7 running on my main rig now, the 64bit version.
I really like it slot compared to vista. Now I can get 4gb
of ram for my rig. I have one problem though with speedfan. It shows my gpu temp in the tray instead of CPU temp. How can I change that?

Sry if there's bad spelling I'm using my I touch

Re: Windows 7 Thread and FAQ

Speedfan and that have to be updated to work properly.
