The recovery console is reached by booting from the installation disk and choosing the repair option instead of the install now. That then brings you to a command prompt for manually typing in those commands.
Have you heard any clicking sounds from the drive itself? That would point at the read/write heads failing meaning the drive was on the way ouit. If the drive isn't being seen by the bios the drive may have already gone doa on you.
