Default Win XP product key change

Hi, I am new here. I have a question if anyone can help.

My Windows XP Professional CD registration key has mysteriously changed three times in the past twenty four hours following a restoration from an image back up.

I have tried to change it back the "Microsoft" recommended way with no success.

Has anyone any idea why it would have changed and if there is another way to manually change it back.

Has Microsoft adopted a technique that I should /should not be worried about?

Any advice would be help full to help me understand this phenomenon.

Cheers

Well, like I said, it changed all by itself from a different number to the one that I have.
