Well the dell CD key will work

However as DELL ships recovery media, the actual CD will only really work on Hell PC's.

Also if you buy actual copy's of XP instead of get them with stuff, microsoft lets you install em more often as well.

I wonder how these people are getting them to work?

It's up to the CD what type of computer it will run in. There is probably an instruction set on the CD that tells it to only work on HP's and Dells. Same with the CD's Chris was talking about.

my gateway cd said that, but I use that cd to format plenty of computers

Yeah, i could use my Gateway disc as well. But io know that Dell discs know what machine they are going in. I guess it's just one of those things...
