Windows XP Professional - Retail - $219.95
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16837116195

Windows XP Professional - OEM - $146.95
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16837102062

Difference in price - $70

I would buy the OEM version.

I have done it a hundred times. Your friend is ignorant!!! You do not get support from Microsoft from OEM and you get 3 installs before you need to call MS and re-activate by telephone. They never turn you down. I always say I have just reformatted because of a virus or new hardware add. They just ask you if it is used only on one machine and, or course, you say yes!!
Simple as that!!!
