Default What's the best way to run CHKDSK?

Hello everybody,

I just want to know what the best way is to run CHKDSK. Today, I ran chkdsk. I went to "Start"--> "Run" and typed "command". At the DOS window, I typed chkdsk. So far, so good. It says it found problems in the "Volume Bitmap" and "File System". So, I typed chkdsk /f and scheduled a scan at the next reboot. The system rebooted, ran the chkdsk and auto rebooted again. Chkdsk never mentioned if it fixed anything.

Once I got to Windows, I did a chkdsk again and guess what? More problems...Volume Bitmap and File System.

I've repeated this at least *8* times and every single time, chkdsk finds problems and wants me to reboot with the /F tag.

What's going on here? Does CHKDSK only fix one problem at a time during reboot? Whay doesn't it tell me that it found and fixed problems?

Is there a better way to run CHKDSK?

Thanks in advance.

open up my computer. Right click the hard drive you want to check, and then select properties. THen select tools and error checking, click check Now. Then select both check boxes and click start. This will give you a prompt to run the next time you reboot and click Yes. Then reboot. This will do it a lot more thoroughly.
Good Luck

Thanks Inaris,

I did what you mentioned (I had forgotten that you could do it that way) but I'm still getting the same result.

Everytime I do a CHKDSK it finds problems. And every time, I reboot with the /F switch and it never seems to fix anything.

Not sure what to think...

You have a drive that is dying. please post a picture or the text from the winlogon event message in the system eventlog. That will tell us more information.

start, run, eventvwr, click system, find even Winlogon and open it, either copy out the test of the message or post the information here so we can read it.

Thanks, and good luck

Hello,

Here's the data for the last Event WinLogon (it was under 'Application' BTW). Here it shows that it found no problems, but while in the WindowsXP environment, it seems to find problems. Even Norton Utilities Disk Doctor finds problems.

The first 4 log iles did, in fact, show that it fixed problems. The funny thing is that it never really said anything on the screen...
