Default What is ntoskrnl.exe

I recently installed Sygate Personal Firewall (any comments on that?) and I keep getting a message that ntoskrnl.exe is trying to access the network. I am assuming that this .exe is trying to access the internet for some reason. First of all, am I correct in assuming this and what is this about?
Thanks... I appreciate any help anyone can give me.

NTOSKRNL.EXE is Windows NT Kernel. This is a low level communication tool that allows Windows to function.
Disabling this may prevent Internet access and file print share. I recommend that you allow this.
