what is a good freeware alternative to Outlook Express?

Hi,

I have been using Outlook Express as my e-mail program, and I have been very happy with it, but lately it is acting funny and I get error messages when sending e-mails saying the mail could not be sent, whereas in fact is was sent.

So I thought I might want to get a freeware alternative to Outlook Express, I knoe there are some out there but I have no idea which ones are good.

Any kind of suggestion/input/adviced on this would be appreciated.

And it would be great if I couold open Outlook Express e-mails (.eml) with it.

Do you know if it's possible to open e-mail that were saved in Outlook Express (.eml format) with Thunderbird?

Ideally I would prefer to be able to still use Outlook Express, but something's wrong with it and I'm not sure I can fix it.

If you want you can upgrade with the Windows Live Essentials 2011 Pack. It includes Windows Live Mail, which is a great alternative to Outlook Express I think. Gives somewhat the same feel but just a more modern look.
