Voice over IP - Long distance

I live in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. I staying now in Montevideo, Uruguay for a couple of months.
Making phonecalls to friends is very expensive. I do have a laptop with me and an internet connection where i'm staying.
128kb/s up & down.
making phonecalls with messenger simply just sucks. So i'm looking for a program that's optimized for VoIP. I found a program called Skype that works quit well but I'm looking for some other programs as well to see what works best for me.

Any recommendations??

P.S.
I can't believe VoIP is still not developed into a good alternative to hardlines for consumers. All the technology is there, broadband internet is as common as cable tv so what the fuck????
Wouldn't suprise me if big telephone companies got a hand in this

hmmm.. techtv was showing a voice over ip app for windows like 3 mo. ago. go here and search for voice over ip.

Yea, TechTV was showing Skype.
I use RogerWilco when I play games online....works very well, but instead of calling users, you setup one of the PCs as a server and then the other person connects to the server. Or you can connect to a free server.
