Did you try the headphone on another device?

Are you sure that your laptop uses that port as a headphone jack and not a mic jack?

my audio driver has an interface...I have to tell it what is connected to what jack

if headphones work...could just be the jack (on the mobo/tower) that's dead

It is a laptop. But that is a good point. You might have to go into the Control Panel and tell vista that it is a headphone attached not a mic. Vista could be thinking it is a mic.
