Default Re: Vista Freezing Up / BSOD's

Well, I tried installing SP1, hoping the problem would go away. After rebooting the first time, after the Vista loading screen, 0xA bluescreen - IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. God Im so sick of these things.

Restarted into safe mode, and the updates started to install. I got to stage 3, 100%, then it said "Service Pack did not install. Reverting changes." and sat for about three hours. Finally, FINALLY, after rebooting, bam, blue screen again. Im backing up all my files now, and getting ready to reformat and start clean. I got all my drivers off the Asus website, except for the nVidia driver, which came off their site. If you wouldnt mind checking the site while Im formatting, could you please tell me which video driver I should use? Also, I used the latest nForce drivers from nVidia, and the latest ones off the Asus site, basically the only ones available for Vista.

PS. Thanks for taking the time to read over my logs! I knew someone here would do it

Well i would give you a option for you Video Card but sadly you didnt tell what card you have. So i cant give a recommendation without knowing.

I should have warned you. Enable Windows Firewall and disable all other protection and monitoring-type software. Then you should be able to get SP1 isntalled correctly. A few people had this issue with SP1 not installing correctly for them and this was the solution that we found out worked.

Heh, its in my sig "XFX 8600GT"

Another problem I was having was that I could do any Windows Updates (errored out on me, forget the error). However, now that Ive reformatted, I dont get the error anymore, so thats one good sign Ill download all the updates off Windows Update, then update with whatever you tell me to, then try SP1.

I bet the Windows Firewall thing was the problem! I always turn the M$ one off and just dont use one (yes yes, unsafe, I know the risks, but I feel confident in what I do).

Lemme know what to do

Woohoo, it does updates now. Downloaded all the updates and drivers, restarted a few times to make sure there werent any more, and I dont get any more blue screens. The only thing I do get once in awhile is where the screen goes black for about ten seconds, then comes back to Vista saying that the xxxxx.sys (video driver) has errored out but it was able to restart it (forget what it actually said but thats the gist of it). Windows Update gave me version 7.15.11.6369. Should I update or just leave it?

I would checkthe nVidia site. They have driver version 163.75 there. That might help stop that issue.

With the newest version, which I had before, thats what was causing the BSODs, and you said to roll back.

Yes but you had other issues as well. Which you dont have now. So try these and see if they work for you now.

About half an hour after installing the nVidia graphics drivers, my computer locked up (no blue screen, just froze). Then, when I came back to the computer this morning, I had this one:
