Hi everyone,
Mine is a very odd problem. I have just purchased and installed new components, they are as follows:
Asus Rampage Formula mainboard
E8600 Dual Core
Corsair Dominator 1066 (2 x 2gb) - 1 stick only used for install
ATI 4870X2
Am using an IDE DVD Drive
BIOS 0410
All bios settings set to default/auto - havent changed anything.
Heres the problem:
XP Pro installs like a dream and runs like a dream, no worries.
Vista 64 however doesnt like me one bit. I boot using my vista disk and do the normal partition followed by format. This is where the strange things start happening, the format which i know is quick with vista takes an usually long time, about 2-3 minutes. Doing a visual on the my hdd and dvd drive led's shows them to remain inactive for the 2-3 minutes then they start flickering and the format then completes. hmmmmm.
Then it starts the setup process:
The first step (cant remember exactly what is says) happens almost immediately.
The second step (Expanding files) takes up to 4 hours. It just runs dog slow. What i am noticing with the hdd and dvd drive led's is they only flicker on occassionally and for most of the time remain inactive. Obviously this is why its taking so long, the dvd drive just doesnt seem to wanna wake up.
The remaining steps seem to get through in semi ok time.
Once installed the first boot to vista desktop isnt to bad until i start trying to install apps and just navigate around windows in general. It just runs awful. Simple apps can take minutes to kick in and load, apps actually stop responding and eventually booting into windows and shutting down can take an awfully long time. I dont epxerience any BSOD's, its just really sluggish. Never experienced this before and i have built many systems.
I have had a bit of a read around the forums and picked up on a possible issue around using an IDE DVD drive with the rampage forumla chipset and vista??? Ive read suggestions saying to move to a SATA DVD Drive because the mainboard chipset doesnt work well with IDE dvd drives?? Could this be the problem? It sounds like a good explanation for my 4 hour install time and the likely corrupted operating system as a result of this. And im guessing its a vista only issue? Can anyone shed some light on this?
I know the new components are not faulty as i can install xp pro fine and play away on it happily without a single problem. Everything running nice and quick.
Please someone put me out of my misery and give me the obvious solution to my problem. If only PC's were simple.......
