Question Was this a virus or did someone restore my pc?

A couple of weeks ago, I came home from work and turned on my pc. When It came on I was shocked. It is a HP computer and it has win 98 2nd edition on it. It was searching for drivers as it was loading up. When it got to the desktop, it had the desktop background that originally was on the computer when I bought it. I had changed that moons ago. A lot of my programs where still there but not all working. Along with some programs that came with my computer when I first got it. But I had long deleted them. Some worked some didn't. I had to wipe it again and start anew.

Now I have a small network in my home and my other PC did in fact take a while to load up for some reason that day but it did load it up. It has winxp pro.

My question is this, did in fact I get some sort of virus that can roll back 98 to when I first got it or did someone put in the HP recover disk.

On the recovery disk it has a option to completely erase all info and restore or recover and not lose anything.
