how is shared system memory determined??

I am guessing its determined by Windows

if so, what are you guys sitting at?

Shared Memory is only determined by the BIOS for machines that dont have a dedicated GFX card.

As you see mine doesnt have that Shared part. Cause i have a dedicated card.

That is all controlled by the BIOS as well. Not by Windows.

I am not quite sure if I understand you Maki

from what I can see in the screen shots
Code:
Total Available Graphics Memory: 2303MB
Dedicated Video Memory 1024MB
So you have a 8600GT w/ 1GB memory
yet Total Available Graphics Memory is 2303MB
that extra 1279MB must be from somewhere?

or am I just reading that wrong?

thats a good question. it sounds to me like something similar with the pagefile. in the event that whatever your working on requires more video memory, it can use the system memory as backup.

That is the pagefile. That is used to cache GFX and other things on the system. It isnt technically shared memory since it is used for the whole system.

lets call it magically or (on the fly) allocated resources. ;)

That is pretty much what it is. Depending on your pagefile and how much is in use at that time the number will always vary.

you can add memory to a dedicated card too. my friend brian does it all of the time. he can take the part of 4 gigs that 32 bit don't see and allocate it to his video card
