Default a very annoying problem of my machine

My machine (windows XP pro) is really giving me bellyaches.
1) I can not do the windows update now through IE.
2) IE can not open the site with embeded javascript function
3) Later on, I again noticed that my Symantec antivirus can not scan my disk, instead give me an error message as below "Could not start scan. Scan engine returned error 0x20000058."

I don't know what is wrong. It must be a serious problem. Would anyone please give me advices?

Thanks alot

I would reinstall and update your virus scanner, and then do a scan of your computer. I would also download Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D and run those too. This sounds like some kinda virus that is causing problems for you.

Is it a legal copy? It could quite have been the Windows validation thing, they are starting to get serious about that. They as in the man, as in M$.

From what this looks like now, you must have gotten a complex computer virus. These virus's will also commonly target norton (and since norton is crap and their are better free programs) it gets in.

It than disables norton, windowsupdate along with alot of other things.

A reinstall is probolly the only thing that will get your computer back to it's previous state fully.
