Default User-friendly replacement for XP volume control

Is it just me, or is the volume control panel in Windows the most poorly-designed tool in XP? Why in the world do you have to go into the preferences just to toggle between recording and playback volume controls? Is there ANY kind of replacement program for system-wide volume control that doesn't make you jump through hoops just to change your recording input source?
