Angry USB Device disappears after Sp2 install.

If this is a grossly redundant topic, please moderate it out of existance! However, I have searched the forums and have yet to find a reasonablly good explanation as to why it is that after the installation of Sp2 that my puter will no longer recognize my USB/Firewire DVD +rw drive. When plugged nto a USB port it finds the device but says that there was an "unknown error installing the device". When I attach the device to a PCI 1394 firewire card and power up the DVDrw zip....nothing at all happens. I have downloaded the appropriate drives for the NEC dvdrw and attempt to upgrade the drivers in device manager...no dice. I'm stumped! Guess I'll be doing a fresh install of XP Pro unless someone has solved a similar problem. Dang!!!
