Default upgrading from windows2000 to windows XP

I would like to upgrade from Windows 2000 to Windows XP.
Do i need to backup my data before i do it
I mean if i install Windows XP, would that delete all my data and applications?

If you upgrade to XP, no it wont. But, you may be forced with some compatibilty issues. Do the compatibility check first. If you are that worries about it, make a GHOST image of your drive before you upgrade. Or just back up your data.
