upgrading Windows 95 to Windows 98

this is how I backup data from win 95-98 machine. I have a 200 gig Usb backup drive and win 98 drive (I know that this don't pertain to you, but I just telling you anyway).

my usb hdd is ntfs, so a fat32 computer won't see it. but the bart pe cd will. it will copy the file over properly (convert the data to ntfs) and copy them back to the original (fat32) fromat later if needed.

I assuming that you have an xp cd. open pe builder and stick the xp cd in your cd rom (on your xp machine. if don't have xp I can upload a bart pe xp ready cd to send space). it will rip an bart pe iso file to your hdd. burn that iso file to disc as a disc image with something like nero or alcohol.

you can now run a windows environment from cd. you could copy his files to a flash drive or external hdd now as the bart cd with recognize usb. you could copy the files to another slave hdd if you wish. you can use the drive image part to back up the whole thing. if it have an ethernet port, you can back it up to a computer on a network as the bart pe cd will even recognize that

I didn't get my original question answered, but THANKS A LOT I'm actually gonna create the boot disc right now as soon as I'm done this post. For anyone else, I'd still like my original question asked!

Another thing, will it boot XP if the requirements for the computer aren't met. I think this computer might even be a P1 and a few hundred mhz. Yes, I know it's an old computer, but like I said, my buddy doesn't do anything more than email and basic internet usage. I'm trying to convince him to let me build him a computer (tops $250 for basic parts and recycled parts from his current computer), but he's a full-time musician, he's hardly home for more than a few days at a time except when he purposely takes a few weeks to a month off for a break every year, and he just can't really afford a new computer. So, he really doesn't need a fast computer. In fact, he had a computer from the 80s that was SUPER slow that 95 was quite an upgrade for him at the time. He's also on dialup still since he's not home and online enough to get full benefits from Cable/DSL. It'd be a waste of money considering how much he uses the computer a month.

I think, if by next Christmas I can get a good paying job, I may build him a computer with XP Home, or whatever the new Microsoft OS is if it really is coming out soon as expected.

banking files,
user profiles,
my documents (though...i guess are in profiles...but...),
if you can find it the bookmarks for the internet browser,
and anything else that you consider important (porn!!!! i mean........pictures of a certain nature ) lol


just popped into my head.....what about removing the hard drive, setting it as slave, putting it into another computer and transferring the important files, then when you have 98 installed just transfer back over the network?

i've done that before when i just had 1 partition and needed to format...

I will be taking my 80 gig hard drive. put it in his computer, and use Acronis or PartitionMagic for a full backup, which shouldn't take long considering that his hard drive couldn't be larger than 10 GB unless it's been upgraded (I doubt it). Then I'll do an extra step by backing up the emails into a csv file just incase if I can't just move the dbx files around. The MyDocs, favorites, and email contacts list files I shouldn't have problems with just backing up the files directly.

I created the boot disc and tested it on both my PC and my laptop. I'd have to say it is VERY impressive and I am greatful to have been introduced to it by you. It works great, but there are just a few problems.

First, I can't get the network adaptors to be recognize to put in an ip address, not that it's important in this case.

2nd, I can't use my external harddrive storage case (where I currently have my 80 gig for my own backup) to be recognize, because I need to install the drivers for it. However, I don't think I'm able to take the Boot CD out of the CD Drive to put in the Drive CD for the external storage case, since the BART PE thing runs primarily off the CD. Any suggestions? I could try to put the install files onto the hard drive first before rebooting to the disc.

I really appreciate your help. I should be getting the Win 98SE disc in the mail within the next week, and depending when my buddy is free, I'll try to get it done asap. I will then post an update on how it went, and if it got the printer to work. I think I might then need to install the drivers for the USB port on the motherboard, but not sure. any suggestions on that? I'm figuring I'd need atleast 2 hours to do this, most of the time being backups and stuff... the upgrade process shouldn't be too long.

wait a minute... I figured out how to get my external hard drive to work. I need to have it plugged in first before booting to the disc, or else it won't get recognize. I do still have to have the driver installed I believe, so I'll see about copying the install files to the hard drive first, then boot to the disc and try installing it using BART PE... only thing is though that I don't know if I'm able to do installation and stuff through BART PE...

Actually, I am able to install files using BART PE, so I shouldn't have a problem copying the install files to the harddrive, then using BART PE to install the usb storage case, and then rebooting to use the external hard drive case. Thanks for your help, I'll keep you up to date on it!
