You mean is there a program that would catalog them for you? Here's the only one I know of...

As for losing quality of the movie...well, the only way to really do that is rip as an iso, but that's only for burning them back to dvd...see the problem there. You could rip them as an MKV with H.264(x264) instead of XviD.

bturz, it's worth shrinking them a little. Even if you cut them down to half size it'll be an improvement. Taking an ISO or vob/ifo down 50% in size sounds a lot, but in terms of quality loss it's nothing, try it out on one of the movies if you feel skeptical.
Then you'll be able to fit twice as many movies on a drive. Your choice in the end...
 
You're right mate, an AVI/MKV at around 2gb or so would be fine. Would still be pretty high quality.
