On a daily basis I generally have between 55-65 processes running at al times. I know that a lot of these processes are due to programs I have on the desktop or other essential running programs. When I'm looking for better performance I go into the task manager and shut down the processes that I know are safe to do. However, I'm sick of this and most importantly I'd like to know what processes can be safely shut down. Or perhaps what processes can't be shut down. Are there programs out there that explain what every process is doing? Is it normal to have this many running at all times?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

You can disable certain processes from starting up entirely by doing

Start > Run > "msconfig"

without the quotes. Click on the Startup tab and uncheck anything you don't want to start running when your boot up your machine. In order to check what processes do what, you can look them up at

I only have about 20 processes running.

Disable some stuff from here too.
Start > Run > "services.msc"
