I once heard that having too many icons on your desktop would slow your PC down. One of the PCs in our house has 57 icons on the desktop. Is this true or just another legend?

Don't think this is correct. Having many icons don't necessary means it will slow down your PC unless may be you have an already outdated slow PC
. Icons may need to be refreshed but once the cache is ok and not emptied, no need to keep refreshing I think.
Yeah, that's bogus.
I have no icons on my desktop. I use a dock instead (RocketDock). I put all of the shortcut icons into a folder on my hard drive and set an entry on the dock to open it up. that way I can put my main stuff on the dock and only have a single one to handle that for me.
This is an old screen shot, but it shows what I am talking about (click for larger image):
That may be ObjectDock in that shot, but it works the same. The black folder toward the left (beside the Ventrilo icon) was the one for the folder.

Icons have nothing to do with speed, just as the amount of favorites you have in your internet browser won't effect your computer's speed.
