there no icons on my screen

yesterday I was using alot of virtual memory all a sudden my icon disappeared

Interesting. Right mouse click on your desktop and click properties. Under the Desktop tab click the Customize Desktop button. Under Desktop Icons are any of the four selected? If so I'm not sure what happened. If they aren't select them and see if those icons appear.

You could try making a shortcut on the desktop of something in the start menu and restart and see if it stays.

have you tried right clicking your desk top and go to "arrange icons by" then "show desktop icons" and making sure that "show desktop icons" is not unticked?
