svchost error during windows update

everytime i go to windows update and while it checks for updates, i get an svchost error. my system then becomes unresponsive. i can move the mouse, can go to the start menu but i can't open any programs or shutdown/restart. it's like it's stuck or something. (ran virus scanner and no virus/spyware found)

Next time this happens, open task manager and see how many iexplore.exe processes are running. If you have more than one, kill all but one.
