does anyone know the regkey(s) that controls this?

Auto Updates for java are controlled by a process called jusched.exe; you can disable this in msconfig (start/run/ type msconfig/startup tab) then to run it again, just run jusched.exe

Sorry, I don't know the Reg Key though. Just look for jusched.exe, or something in regedit.
In the eyes of Bill Gates, the open source world seems un-activated...
