I'm sure there's a way to get a new recovery CD for you particular type of laptop, from Apple. People do lose and break them from time to time. However, it's probably gonna cost you, but that's to be expected.
I would -not- suggest taking the laptop into a Mac shop right away. Call them first and explain the scenario in a no-names way, and see what they say. Just be honest and tell them you bought it from a vendor on the corner in NYC and now suspect it was stolen. See what they say.
If they do re-poses the laptop when you take it in, they might give you some kind of compensation for bringing it in. Especially if the laptop still contains data.
Still, I don't think I've ever traded a PC for a Mac before. That's kinda cool. (Although I'd do it in more sound ways...)
