Start -> Programs -> right click on the Startup folder and click Open. Right click again on any white space and go to New -> Shortcut. Find the program you want to add a shortcut for.

The next time your computer starts, the program you created a shortcut for will start up with Windows.

i tried to start a peer guardian programme with start up and it has not worked. windows is blocking this programme from starting- would it have something to do eith UAC settings if so how can i downgrade this programme? any ideas?

Some programs will ONLY run as services in which peer guardian is one case. Follow those steps Mak linked to.

There isn't an official version of PeerGuardian 2 that is Vista compatible. You're lucky to get it to work at all. Turning UAC off will at least get it to load at start up with the "Start with Windows" box checked.
