I will only mess with the registry after I save a copy of it. Then you can fix whatever you screw up.

That is a good idea. If you dont mess it up so bad you cant even get into Safe Mode to fix it.

you can dramatically reduce your startup time by removing all startup items in msconfig besides any AV or firewalls. you can also remove the startup and shutdown sounds... <-- that one sped my comp up pretty good.

I've seen PCs that boot in under 30 seconds or so using 15,000 rpm SCSI drives. No registry hack...

Most of the boot process is loading the OS into Ram.

If you use linux, you can run the ENTIRE os out of ram is you have over 1 gig and everything is outrageously fast.
