splitting a file

I've split a file using HJ Split. The original file works with Windows Media Player, but the split files won't open up with with WMP (however
they will open up with another media player - both the original and the
split ones). Any suggestions on how to solve this problem (e.g. would
renaming help?). Thanks for your help.

What's the extension of the original and the splitted files?

The extension on the original is mpg. HJ Split breaks it up into two files with no extension (just to mention that even without the extensions, Media Player Classic will play the new files as that player is loaded up
with codecs. However I strongly prefer Windows Media Player due to
the great sound quality I'm getting with it). I've tried renaming the
split files using the mpg extension, but no luck.
