sp3 automatic update failure

The backround: Originally had sp2 but got corrupted with virus' so had the hard drive wiped and reinstalled. The computer shop installed sp3 and the windows automatic updates didn't not work.

I have used Avira antivirus and then dial-a-fix but the auto update won't 'enable' and it sometimes comes up with the error '1058' but it seems that the main problem is that it can not associate itself with the hardware. There is only one profile in the 'log on' section but the 'bits' are set as started.

It is so confusing as I am pretty much a novice with computers (and this is my first time using a forum). I would appreciate any suggestions.

hi just for clarity this is a xp os ok if it is you can try this Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP installation or you repair a Windows XP installation and possibly this http://www.computer-rescue.com.au/files/fix_windows_update_after_repair.bat which i found here XP SP3 - wont let me install updates! - Windows
