sound not working after vista upgrade

i just upgraded my gateway laptop to vista and the sound is not working. there is an x over the icon in the bottom right corner. when i put the mosue over it it says "no audio output device is installed" i went to device manager and it says the audio driver is there. i went to gateway.com and downloaded the sound driver anyway restarted the computer and still no sound.

any ideas

First you have to remove the older XP drivers in order to have Vista see a fresh detection of the onboard sound. One thing to try right off is right clicking on the item seen in the Sound section in the DM and choose the uninstall option to have Wimdows remove the current inactive drivers. You would then restart the laption and then try the updated driver set.
