Slow transfer over ethernet

Trying to move a ton of stuff over from my main PC to my netbook, mainly video and music, unfortunately transfers at less than 1MB/s, so using a usb stick would be much faster. Both are gigabit-capable, though the router/switch is probably only rated for 100MB/s. If there's one area of computing I'm severely lacking in, it's networking. Could do with a bit of help, please ^_^

What type of router do you have?

Have you changed any settings within it?
