Setup/Update Files

I'm having a problem starting my computer, as it stars it says:

(Windows ME)

Setup is updating your configuration files. THis may take a few minutes.


Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2
%1 %2

It then repeats 'Windows could not..." once every 2-3 minutes. Any ideas? I don't have a windows setup cd. I believe the problem was caused by the autoupdating of Avast Antivirus, as it failed in the middle and gave me an error.

Can you get into the save mode?

Couldnt load in safe mode- did get it to load.

Howver, now the computer seems to have failed completely. If I install XP over ME, will my docs live?

probably not, make sure you choose to NOT format and do not delete any partitions during setup. after you save your files i would format and re-install winXP from scratch. this prevents any problems by upgrading from winME. avoid upgrading whenever possible. you can also download and boot with a knoppix CD and boot with it to save your files to floppy disk or other storage.
