Hey guys,

I've been posting a lot today. Sorry if it's too much, let me know if I need to chill. I've started this thread to discuss software tools for security and regular computer maintenance. I'm running Windows 7, currently the software I'm using to try keeping my machine running efficiently and malware free is: Malwarebytes for virus and registry scanning, AVG LinkScanner only for browsing, and CCleaner for cleanup here and there with the occasional defrag through windows. I'm sure I'm probably missing something I should implement or use something different. Also I'm curious about the recommended frequency that these different tools should be run.

im still using bitdefender av free ed. based off a 2013 av report. I was surprised to see a report in 2014 saying free AVG is back to being the best free av.

The Best Antivirus for 2014 | PCMag.com
AVG AntiVirus FREE 2014 is our current Editors' Choice for free antivirus. It shares the top score in my hands-on malware blocking test with four others, among them Avira Free AntiVirus (2014) and FortiClient 5.0 (also free).

I also have super antispyware loaded for manual malware scans.

I don't run as admin, but use admin password when its required. uac prompts me for input.

i avoid bad places on the internet. I uncheck any ad / spy / mal ware when installing software.

i use incognito mode when feeling frisky.

this usually keeps me safe

edit - also update windows, java, adobe flash, and adobe reader regularly

This is about the only site I trust for non-bias AV reviews: AV-Comparatives Summary-Report » AV-Comparatives

doesn't test free products.

however, it is because of this report that we use Kaspersky at work. it sometimes has trouble pushing the license file out at renewal and the network agent can go wonky at times. We've had to setup some exclusions to prevent file locking. Some critical updates do not push automatically through the Security Center and we manually install on every pc.

other sysadmins are telling me to give eset a try.

What do u guys think about protective software aside from AV? And I'm insure what u mean by incognito mode for sketchy browsing

As should always be, the best defense is common sense. If you need multiple programs to keep your PC clean then you need to rethink what you're doing online.

Incognito mode is a part of Chrome.

What? Yeah they do, lol... They tested Avira, AVG, Avast, Fortinet FortiGuard, Microsoft MSE, Duba, Panda Cloud Free, Qihoo 360, Trencent QQ PC Manager and I think BitDefender paid uses the same engine as the free edition.

Eset has always been a good choice as well.

I'm very cautious about usage oft machine, however, I ran it with no AV or anything for a few months and then installed malewarebytes and it found quite a bit. I run windows updates frequently and try to be careful about things I download. I'm just trying to get a better understanding and apply the tools that should be used and not miss a vital part of maintenance or security for the machines I've got

Well like I said, just a matter of connom sense and knowing what not to click and what not to download. Also helps to not go to porn sites, not click ads (actually just use adblock anyways), not click on popups, don't download from known virus filled torrent sites, and if the site looks risky it probably is. I've run without an AV for 8 years or so now without issue. Would be more, BUT I did get a virus but that was secondhand due to somebody infecting the whole LAN.
