Occasionally my system (Win XP Pro) gets overloaded with an unwanted process, usually while I'm playing a video- in task manager it would appear to be something called "helpctr.exe", which repeats itself up to 300 times, hogging all my ram, paralyzing the system and necessitating a reboot.

This is probably because of something I did with X setup, but I wasn't improvising on my own- I was following instructions to a tee from a reputable tweaking website.

So I need to reinstall the help file, I think (how do I do that without reinstalling windows?) If anyone knows of an easier/better way that would be appreciated.

Repair -that's the same as "upgrade", right? I tried it, and it didn't solve the problem, so I tried deleting all the files in the following directories:

C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\binaries

C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\System\Remote Assistance\Interaction\Common

C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\System\sysinfo

This is working so far...if not, I might have to do a complete reformat.

Repair is not the same as a upgrade. It is where the Widnows fiels are replaced.

Go to the Virus area and go thru Osiris's guide.
