Hello guys, I have a question about connecting to my sons computer. He's in his teens and I want to monitor what he is downloading and getting into on there without him knowing it. He spends too much time on there so I am a bit concerned.

So my question is.. do you know what would be a good program (With the most features) I can use to get access to his computer without something sitting in his task bar or somewhere like in his program files where he would notice it. He's not dumb when is comes to modern day technology. Also I would like it to be a startup deal so that after he does a restart I can still monitor what is going on. Everyone in the family has McAfee Anti-Virus, SpyBot S&D, and Uniblue SpyEraser running on our machines so I would like this program not to be picked up by them.

If anyone has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated! I just need to know what part I put on my wife and I's computer and what I put on his. Thank you all so much!

Sincerely,
Colin

Alright after further discussion it comes down to this. Is the child a minor still? Also how can we know this is your child. Not like this isnt the first time someone tried to access someone else's PC with giving false information.

But i was over turned in my decision.

The truth is there isnt many applications that can not be detected by something else. So my first question is what Operating Ssytem is being run on there? Windows XP or Windows Vista. That will be the main factor as to what can be done as much of the software can not be run on Windows Vista.

Cheers,
Mak

My kid, my house... the computer is open ground and I would tell him so. I would check out his browsing history and the like anytime I felt I needed to do so. If the history/cookies are gone, the computer goes, too.

I did this with my own daughter, and would do it with any other kid under my roof. She never knew when I had checked her computer out, but she knew that I did.

I was going to post and actually was about to post but lost Internet. Got back online and it was locked.

To do this covertly is wrong IMO. Your right, your house, your computer, your rules. But i believe you go into the hacking side of things when you try to take over control without them knowing. If you have the ability to walk over to the computer and search it, great do so. But to actually install programs in which someone wouldn't see the program, or wouldn't know you were controling the computer is hacking IMO.

What i read from your post was you wanted some parental controls, and the ability at some point to take over the computer. First off you can tell a program to install anywhere you want, so who's to say you have to install it in the Programs file, install it somewhere else. Most programs also give you the option of not placing something on the start menu.

I was going to post some products here, but you want something that they wouldn't know you have installed - again i don't agree with. Norton Internet Security has a parental control addition you can get. There are also some other software packages you can get like Net Nanny, Safe Eyes, and Cyberpatrol. There are plenty others, some giving you detailed items of what the user accessed and where they were on the Internet. Vista comes with parental controls. You can control what a user can use, what websites they can or cannot go to, and when they can or cannot log on. You have to be an admin in order to do so.

With taking over the computer i would suggest logmein. They WILL know if you've installed this, as the application must run in the background in order for you to control the computer whenever. And as in any legitimate software that enables remote control, the user ultimately has the ability to cut the connection or control the cursor before you.

I enjoy Net Nanny, rather good software, requires password to remove and what not, the install folder is protected from all users including admin unless he has access to that password. It also includes a web based interface you can access from any pc, limit there usage and everything, also monitor there IM messages. It does cost, there is no free version as it is a web based program. (Gets updates and settings from there server) It will also report any links that he attempts to go to, and you can have it show a 404 error page instead of a net nanny page when he attempts to go to a website.

Netnanny is quite good, you could use logmein if you install it.

Or block most P2P or IM or any other type of traffic apart from http and https on the router/firewall.

netnanny+firewall is a good combo

the one thing that the serial school shooting kids have in common? their parents never checked their computers

I know that we live in a free country. I'm sorry the country isn't free anymore, but that's another subject

but a kid isn't free to do what he want. he's his parent responsibility until he's grown so he must follow and conform to his parents rules. that's what wrong with society these days. the parents are being their kid's best friend's rather than their parents and the kids are stuck on pleasing their selves instead of putting other first, hence the term generation me which refer to today's kids.

you put that with the dumbing up of society that the government's doing (can you say OGT) and we have a scary future

I periodically check my kids computer. I can do what I want since I built it. as a matter a fact I took it out the basement and put it next to mine a few years ago once I discover that they were looking at porn. when they are grown and buy their own computer then you can say that I'm hacking. right now I'm parenting

I can't find the name of the software that my buddy use to catch his cheating wife. he sent me the name in an email, but I can't find it. I know that I posted the name here a few times. I'll try to find it

Hello,

There is netnanny, cybersitter and netop. those are the software you will want to check for.

Cheers,
Mak

Our policy in the past has been to NOT allow discussions of this nature since we can not tell if this is a parent, someone wanting to hack at work/home, or just general knowledge on hacking/trojans/keyloggers/etc.
