Default Reinstalling Windows - file loss?

I have been advised to reinstall my Windows XP on my laptop. I have one person telling me to take my harddrive to a professional and get the files I need off of it before doing this because I will lose all files. A second person is telling me I can reinstall without losing files. Please help! Thanks.

This is one place where I was advised to re-install.

Basically, my computer just loops around and around and never actually loads or starts up. Let me know if this link doesn't work. The link should be in this forum under Computer Hardware and the topic was Windows XP IBM Thinkpad starting up problem. Thanks.

I would suggest the same then. Its probably better you do this anyways since you got the laptop from somewhere else. You should a fresh install.

Will I lose the files that I have already created? Since the computer won't acutally start, I would have to bring it somewhere to have them extract it from the hard drive. Or can I re-install Windows without losing the files? Thanks again for your prompt response.

You can do what it called a side by side installation and then you can access your files.
