Question Registry Editor

I've already been to several sites trying to find the answer to this question, and I haven't been able to get a good answer. What exactly is the registry editor in Windows? What can you do with it? What is the point of editing the registry? If you lost a password to something, would it be there? Are your passwords easilly accessible in the registry?
